Many people are confused about what exactly an Interior designer does and are, therefore, afraid to ask them for their help and guidance on a project. Are you worried you may end up with an elaborate ‘changing rooms’ Lawrence Llewelyn Bowen experience, that you have no control over? Believe your project is too small? It will be too expensive, or your home will be judged?

I’m going to bust these myths and talk you through a recent local project in West Cross that I completed for a client who had never used an interior designer before and reassure you that I am here to help and make your life easier.

My Clients reached out to me via Instagram to see if I could give them some advice on what could be done to make their hall and front room brighter and more welcoming spaces. They were struggling with ideas and didn’t really know where to start.

The first step is a ‘discovery meeting’. I will pop over to your home, have a good look at the space, and have a chat about how you want to use that space; your likes, dislikes, whether the furniture is staying – always with the option of upcycling, repurposing, and sustainability in mind. I will take measurements of the room and take lots of photos of the space. Having any images you have found that you like and a rough budget is really useful at this stage too.

I will then take all these aspects into consideration and write up a project ‘Brief’.

Example Brief for Bellevue Project – Lounge

This is an example of the brief at Bellevue for the front room. A separate brief will be done for each individual space.

The Space – Front room

The Brief – To create a pleasant, comfortable and attractive space that is inviting. Somewhere to read, have a coffee and relax.

How –

Paint the walls to tie in with the hall decor with the option to add panelling.

Reupholster some of the sofa cushions to tie in with the new colourway.

Add a seating pad and cushions to the wooden bench seat to provide additional seating, making it softer and more inviting.

Move the antique wooden chest for use as a coffee table.

Add a rug, side table, lamp, plants and art to style the space.

Create a focal point of the fireplace and place a mirror above.

Replace the ceiling light.

Remove doors to allow the space to flow into the kitchen/diner and not restrict the fireplace and wooden bench.

The next step is to produce a design scheme, a ‘Mood board’ or ‘inspiration board’ will help with this. It will include paint colour, wallpaper, furniture, lighting, fabric, textures, pattern, images etc. These will help to give you a good idea of what can be included in the space and how they will all work together.

The mood boards can also be done in 3D and include room layouts.

I will then collect physical samples and share those with you so you will see how the different colours and textures mesh. There will always be different options offered to ensure that you will love the final scheme.

Once a final scheme has been decided, a sourcing list with shoppable links will be provided so that everything can be easily ordered to your home.

Depending on the package that you choose, I can be on hand to organise any trades and project manage the work to make sure everything runs smoothly, saving you time and preventing stress. I can organise carpenters to install built-in cupboards, for example, painters and decorators, upholsterers, electricians etc. If you are happy to complete some of the work yourselves or have your own contacts then that is always an option, and the final package price will reflect this.

I am on hand to answer any questions during the process and will constantly liaise with you and the trades. After all the work is completed, I will be on hand to install and style the space to make sure it is beautiful and everything you had hoped for.

“Highly recommend! Never done anything like this before, Cat talked us through the options with no pressure and was flexible meeting us around our schedule. She very quickly got a feel for what we liked and the mood boards reflected this. Cat kept in regular contact, updating us and she also popped in regularly to monitor standards and check progress after coordinating all the tradespeople. So pleased with the result and will definitely be engaging her services in the future!”
