The days of magnolia and white walls being your only options when decorating a room are long gone and although the use of ‘neutrals’ is still going strong, paint and colour can be used in really clever and interesting ways to completely change the feel of a room.
‘Colour drenching’ is a brilliant concept which literally means ‘what it says on the tin’ if you’ll pardon the pun!
You literally drench the whole room in the same colour; Painting the walls, skirting, ceiling, coving, architrave and doors all in one colour.
It creates a wonderful cocooning, cohesive feel and has the added bonus of not needing to worry about ‘cutting in’!

Dominant colour on woodwork
The opposite of this method is to use a dominant colour on the woodwork to make a bold statement, helping to create the sought-after wow factor.
This works particularly well in a hallway; the panelling, spindles and stairs themselves can be painted along with the skirting and architraves.
Painted Ceiling
The ceiling has become the fifth wall and painting it white is definitely not the only option.
You can be creative by using a beautiful contrasting colour on the ceiling.
Going dark can create a dramatic or cosy feel depending on the tone.
A band of colour on the top section of the walls, taken up and over the ceiling as an alternative creates interest and works particularly well in rooms with high ceilings.

Another alternative for creating interest is to use block colour. This can be used to create a faux headboard or canopy behind or above a bed and can also be used to frame wall art effectively.
Don’t be afraid to be creative with paint, it is one of the most cost-effective ways of changing the feel of a space.
