Hall storage solutions

Everyone loves the thought of an uncluttered hallway, but that is definitely easier said than done.

There are the shoes, coats, bags, shoes, skateboards, helmets, hats, gloves, more shoes and even bikes! So what options are there?

We were lucky enough to build a new porch as part of the wrap-around extension that we had built for the kitchen and dining room. At the back of this porch is what I call ‘my cupboard of dreams’.

It has floor-to-ceiling storage with cubbies for shoes and boots, coat racks, and shelving with storage for bags, hats, gloves, scarves and even space for some sports equipment.

This means it can all be stored away behind a closed door and leaves the hall clutter-free, that’s the idea anyway!

If you don’t have the space for a ‘cupboard of dreams’ there are numerous other potential options. The cupboard under the stairs is often an overlooked and underused space.

In my last project, the shoe rack and fold-down bike were taking up almost all of the space in the hallway, by putting in pull-out storage under the stairs all the shoes and even the bike can now be stored away easily.

The best way to keep this space organised and easily accessible is to divide the space into manageable sections, as the old adage goes ‘a place for everything and everything in its place’

There are so many simple hall storage options that can work so well. A console table with baskets underneath that can be used for shoes, bags, dog leads etc. There are ample affordable options of baskets available from the likes of Homesense, BandMs, H&M etc.

Hooks at different levels are handy for the organisation of coats, bags, hats, scarves etc. as they can then be reached by everyone big and small. Using labels and giving each family member their own allocated space will make life so much easier too.

There are a multitude of options out there and hunting on facebook market place, reclamation sites and charity shops is always an alternative to buying new. Old pigeon holes, wire cubby holes and lockers make great storage solutions.

And of course not forgetting the ‘IKEA’ hack option, Pax wardrobes and Hemnes shoe racks give lots of scope for upcycling to make clever and stylish storage solutions.
