Christmas is a time when we like to gather around a table, often a large one (with sometimes the wallpaper pasting table making an appearance from the loft or even the garden table brought in from the patio). Every spare chair from around the house is also normally required (including the dressing table stools!?). That is often my reality but whatever your situation is, whether an intimate table for two or a large table for the masses, making it look Christmas-ready as well as gorgeous is a must!

Here are a couple of easy table-scaping ideas for the perfect festive setting.

Foraged Foliage

Holly, ivy, pinecones and evergreen foliage are readily available at this time of year. Use what you can find by foraging in your own garden, a friendly neighbour’s or in the nearby woods. The lovely rich greens and red of the berries give a real authentic feel to any Christmas table.

Take a little sprig of holly with berries, attach a pretty ribbon or even some string, add a handwritten luggage label, pop on a folded napkin and your place settings are complete. Fill a large vase as a centrepiece with foraged foliage (faux options can also be used), and wrap candles with tendrils of Ivy to complete the look.

Dopamine Decor

Adding pops of colour (‘dopamine decor’) has been trending in all aspects of home decor this year and it is definitely something that can work at Christmas time too. I used some bright retro Welsh wool placemats, added pink napkins (no apologies here for the pink!), and tied them with a pretty paper bauble and a soft green ribbon, which created a simple but very effective look. For those of us who love some sparkle, introduce silver or gold baubles, glittery ribbon, and napkins and placemats of your choice to fit with your decor and don’t forget to coordinate your crackers!

Candles add an easy but sophisticated feel and candle sticks can be picked easily from local charity shops, interiors shops or online.

Cute Christmas Tree

The last idea is to make a cute Christmas tree-shaped napkin (details are on my Instagram highlights). You can use any napkin in a colour of your choice. I’ve tied a simple but effective luggage label with a natural hessian ribbon and again added a paper decoration in a colour way to match the decor. Candles, wrapped in eucalyptus leaves and dried hydrangeas complete this pretty look.
